Extinguishing candles.-An automatic extinguisher comprises a split sleeve a having a slot at the upper end, perforated lugs c being formed by a portion of the material at each side of the slot; and an extinguishing-cover e having a depending tongue f with lateral trunnions g, which engage in the lugs c. One of the trunnions is extended, and carries a coilspring h, the ends of which are adjustably connected to the adjacent lug c and the hooked or slotted end of the trunnion. In use, the cover e is tilted back and the split tube is fitted over the candle. In a modification, Fig. 6, the lugs and trunnions are absent, and the spring h<1> is threaded through the tongue f at k and the tube a at j, the middle of the spring being held by a claw f<1> and the ends being clamped in holes i.
