11,944. Pielock, E. May 22. Composite boilers.-The air for combustion in a steam-generator, comprising a vertical boiler 1 and a tubular boiler 2 with an intermediate smoke or combustion chamber 3, is admitted at the top of the smoke chamber, and passes round an arch 4 and walls 5 within it to the rear of the ash - pit 11 and to openings 14 in the rear wall of the vertical boiler ; a stepped baffle 6 depending from the arch 4 mixes the hot gases, heats the air for combustion, and deflects sparks &c. into a chamber 8 at the bottom of the smoke chamber 3.
