Platen machines; number-printing apparatus; printing processes.-A device for stamping salecheques &c. with the date, a serial number, and a mark identifying the operator, comprises a pivoted frame in which the printing-surfaces are mounted and a base over which an inkedribbon passes, the cheque &c. being pressed on to the ribbon by the printing-surfaces which are not inked. The cheques are placed on an ink-ribbon 4, which is traversed by hand or otherwise over a vulcanized-fibre bed 3 and may be fed over inking-rollers. The printing- surfaces are all positives, and comprise date &c. types 11, numbering-wheels 25, and a wheel 19 which prints the numerals 1, 2, 3; the wheel 19 is set by a rack 21 and a handle which also operates an indicator 22 visible through a slot 23. The numerals are arranged in the order 1, 3, 2, so that the most commonly used ones 1, 2 are brought into position by pushing the rack 21 right in or pulling it right out. The numbering-wheels 25 are fitted with ratchets operated by a pawl on an arm on a shaft 26, which arm is oscillated by the engagement of an arm 32 with adjustable stops 33, 34, so mounted that they can be put out of the path of the arm 32, as shown in Fig. 3, when the frame 12 is to be raised by its spring 16 above the position shown in Fig. 1, which is the normal position to which spring 16 raises it. A removable pin 18 and stop-plate 17 normally prevent the frame 12 from rising higher. The units wheel is provided with one deep tooth which permits the tens wheels to be operated at the correct time, and the hundreds wheel is similarly operated.
