Abstract

11,370. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. May 15. Annealing.- -Silicon steel is annealed and its magnetic qualities are improved by heating the sheets to a high temperature and subjecting them to conditions which remove the oxygen and other impurities. The sheets are heated to 1100-1325‹ C. in an electric furnace exhausted to 2-2À5 mm. of mercury, or containing a reducing-gas; or the process may be carried out in two steps by first heating the sheets under ordinary conditions to 1100-1325‹ C. and afterwards heating in the reducing-furnace to 790‹ C. or upwards. The treatment is stated to cause a coalescence of the normal small grains into larger grains. The electric furnace used may comprise a water-jacketed metal box 2 containing graphite grids 5, 6, to which current is supplied by conductors 7, 8 cooled by fluid supplied through tubes 13, 14. The heating-zone is surrounded by graphite or fire-brick screens 15. Pipes are provided for evacuating the furnace and for supplying gas thereto.
