10,558. Chiger, S. May 5. Cash registers with money - manipulating apparatus.-In mechanism, used in connexion with change-giving apparatus, for indicating the difference between the amount of a purchase and the amount tendered, in which setting- levers are first set to represent the purchase amount or subtrahend, are then connected with indicating-drums, and finally are moved with the drums to a setting in accordance with the amount tendered or minuend, the indicating- drums are arranged in such a manner that the drums of the tens and higher denominations are set back relatively to the units drum by onetenth of a revolution. The drums are moved forwards by their corresponding setting-levers, and separate operating-means is provided whereby, when necessary, the drums may be moved forwards through an additional step. The setting-levers 1 have pointers which move over scales 25 and are provided with sectors 3 engaging pinions 4, 5. The pinions 4 are rotatably mounted on a shaft 6 and have secured thereto pinions 7 gearing with disks indicating the minuend. Pinions 9, 10 are slidably mounted on the shaft 6, and can be clutched alternately to the pinions 7 by the movement of a lever 17. The pinions 10 are connected with numeralbearing disks to show the subtrahend and the pinions 9 through racks 11 transmit the difference between the amounts set to indicating- drums 18 ... 21 spring-connected to the stationary shaft 30 and held in set position by a pawl 33 adapted to be released to allow the disks to return to normal position by a cam 34. These drums in their normal position show the numerals 0, 9, 9, 9, respectively, through the apertures 23 in the casing. In operations in which a figure in any denomination of the minuend is greater than the corresponding figure in the subtrahend, additional means must be provided to advance the wheel through onetenth of a revolution. This step is effected by a pivoted pawl 35 mounted on a rack 36, which is adapted to be reciprocated when a shaft 39 is rotated by a handle 43. The rack 36 engages a pinion 38 having two pawls 40, 41 engaging notches in the shaft. If the figure in the subtrahend is greater than the corresponding figure in the minuend, no additional movement is necessary, and to avoid such movement, the pawl 40 is disengaged by means of a cam 45 mounted on a sleeve 46, which sleeve is rotated by the corresponding sector 3 through a pinion 5 loosely mounted on the sleeve and having a projection 51 adapted, when the setting-lever is moved to its full extent, to engage an arm 48 and rock the sleeve to disengage the pawl. The sleeves are coupled together by providing one end with a recess and the end of the other sleeve with a disk and pawl 55 to engage said recess. To uncouple the sleeve the pawl 55 is provided with an arm 56 adapted to be rocked, when the setting-lever is moved, by its engagement with a shoulder of the recess of a member 57 connected to the pinion 5 of the tens and higher denominations.
