Abstract

7288. Garretson, E. March 27. Alarms, fire; electric alarm systems.-In an automatic electric fire-alarm system, the thermal operating-devices consist of conducting-bodies formed of a material, such as silver sulphide or a composition containing it, having a high resistance and a negative resistance-temperature coefficient, a dangerous rise of temperature reducing the resistance sufficiently to effect the operation of the alarm mechanism. A closed circuit 19, 20 contains a resistance 14 and a high-resistance electro-magnet 16, which energizes a swinging soft-iron shutter 17 normally adhering to a soft-iron fan-wheel 18 forming part of an electro-mechanical gong 15. The thermally-sensitive resistance devices 11 are connected in multiple, so that on a dangerous rise of temperature, the magnet 16 is partially shortcircuited, and the gong 15 released. The operating-temperature of the devices 11 may be regulated by varying the electromotive force of the battery, and the system may be tested by increasing the electromotive force and consequently the electric heating of the devices 11.
