Embossing and stamping.-Plates, sheets, or layers of fibrous agglomerated material a r e moulded in relief by means of a shower of solid or liquid bodies projected upon the sheet &c. in the mould. Fig. 3 shows one form of apparatus in which metal balls pass from a reservoir 6 through nozzles 5 and drop on to the sheet &c. 1 of fibrous material placed within the mould 2, which is supported upon a carriage 3 adapted to be reciprocated beneath the nozzles. A sheet 31 of fabric may be placed over the fibrous material. The nozzles 5 and mould are inclined, as shown, and the balls roll off the mould into shoots 9 and pass to a pit 10, whence they are removed by a conveyer 11 and delivered to an inclined table 14 leading back to the reservoir 6. A shutter 28, carried by arms 26 operated by cams 18, controls the feed to the reservoir, and a rule 30 serves to distribute the balls on the table, or this may be effected by giving an oscillatory movement to the table. In a modification, two tables and two sets of nozzles are employed. The nozzles 5 may be arranged at different inclinations, as shown in Fig. 6, to compensate for difference of path. Instead of balls, jets of liquid may be employed.
