Disk and like mills.-In apparatus for crush ing or grinding gravel, sand, &c., comprising a pair of grinding-disks 1, 5 secured to members 2, 7 rotated in opposite directions by means of bevel-wheels 11, 15 gearing with opposite side: of a pinion 12 on the driving-shaft 13, the cap 7 is supported on the shaft 4 by a cotter 8, which engages in a recess 9 in the cap and bears or the convex bed 10 of a slot in the shaft, so thai the cap can tilt to one side to allow any foreign matter which may enter with the sand &c. to pass between the disks. The bed 2 runs on bal bearings on the stand of the machine, and has a sleeve 3 through which the shaft 4 passes. The water and sand &c. pass from a launder 18 through holes 17 in the cap to the bed 2, which is curved as shown at 19 and provided with an outwardly-extending rib to prevent the material from coming into contact with the shaft 4 Grooves 20 may be provided in the upper or lower disk, or in both disks, to direct the material between the disks, and one face of each groove is preferably inclined. For raising or lowering the upper disk, the lower end of the shaft 4 rests upon a thrust bearing 23 carried by a screw 24, which is vertically adjustable in a socket 26 in the bed-plate by means of a collar 24<a> and lock-nut 25. The wheel 15 is adjustable on the shaft 4, to keep it in gear with the pinion 12, by means of a nut 27 and locknut 28.
