Abstract

4511. Drysdale, H., and Jahn, F. Feb. 21. Paper bags, making. - In a machine for making cups, envelopes, or boxes, paper is drawn from a roll secured to a carrier g<1>, Fig.1, loosely mounted on a spindle g. A lever g<6> weighted at g<7> and pivoted to a strap g<3> adjustably secured to the spindle engages a groove at the end of the carrier g<1> in order to tension the web. The paper is gummed at intervals on the underside by a roller i, and a blank x' is severed from the web and slides down a guide f<2> into position between an endless band or conveyer e and one of a series of formers e<1> detachably secured to the conveyer. The blanks may be fed from a pile of sheets, if desired. As the conveyer moves, the former e<1> gradually assumes an horizontal position and clamps the blank in position. The parts x', Fig. 13, are then turned up against the former by spring fingers l, and the forward portion of the blank is turned down on to the former as it passes under a member m. Inclines n, Fig. 19, force the parts x<4> tightly against the former, spring-pressed projections o fold the gummed projections x<3> against the parts x', disks p apply gum to the top projecting portions x<5> of the blank, and a folder with curved depending flanges m<2> turns down the portions x<5>. The completed box passes under a guide-plate s<3>, Fig. 1a, over a heated table q and between endless bands r, which may travel at a speed greater than that of the conveyer. The bands travel inside guides s provided with studs, which are caused to press the bands against the box by bail-like or other springs s<2>. The box is finally stripped from the former by rubberfaced rotating disks t, a roller t<9> forcing the conveyer and former down on to a plate t<8> between the disks t. The driven wheel c around which the conveyer passes is mounted in a block c<2>, which is slidably arranged between guides c<19> and adjusted by means of a spring and set-screw. The gear-wheel c<4> forming part of the train which drives the wheel c is mounted on links c<17>, c<18>, so that the wheel c may be adjusted while its driving-gear remains in mesh.
