Abstract

4485. Jefcoate, H. J. Feb. 21. Track apparatus actuating signals on trains and for stopping trains.-Modifications of the apparatus described in Specification 2109/02 comprise the mounting of the track contacts overhead with a protective housing and a detailed construction of the ' danger ' verticallysliding engine contact. The track contacts A, B, Fig. 3, comprise long bars mounted on links on the cross girders 5 of a light girder gantry, and have a protective housing 9. The contacts A, B, giving ' safety ' and ' danger ' indications respectively, are interconnected to balance one another by a double-armed crank device 11, 12, Fig. 4. The ' danger ' bar B is slightly the heavier, so that in case of breakage of the operating connexions, the ' danger ' indication is given. The engine apparatus, which is of the kind described in the above-mentioned Specification, has three contacts 1, 2, 3, Fig. 3, of which the two 1, 2 are operative for safety ' and ' danger ' indications at ' distant' signals. Additional track contacts may be employed at ' home ' signals to operate the contacts 2, 3 to give ' danger ' and ' safety ' indications. A particular construction of the ' danger ' contact 2 is shown in Figs. 6 and 7, in which the roller 2<a> engaging the track contact is carried by a cylindrical plunger 2 sliding in a casing 24. Balls 26 fit in grooves 27, 28 in the plunger 2 and the casing 24 to form an antifriction bearing, and a spring 29 restores the plunger after operation. Electric contacts 30 are normally in contact with an insulating-portion 30<a> of the plunger, but are connected on depression of the plunger by the portion 2<b>. The engine circuit thus made operates the engine indicating - apparatus. A roller 22 on the plunger operates the whistle and brake apparatus, such as is described in Specification 6951/11, by depressing a cable connexion 23. If the train passes a ' danger ' signal at high speed, the ' danger plunger is depressed and held in the depressed condition by a catch 32, Fig. 7, the releasing handle 33 of which can preferably only be operated from outside the cab of the locomotive. The semaphores may be mounted on posts supported on the gantry.
