Abstract
4484. Spencer, F. Feb. 21. Couplings, operating from engine or train.- In slipping - apparatus for railway and like vehicles, of the kind in which a device acted on by the brake power prevents unlocking of the slip coupling until a valve is operated to relieve the device from the action of the brake power, the valve is arranged to be actuated by the closing of the end cock on the front part of the train. The slip hook 5<a> is locked bv a bolt 10 operated by a lever 3, which is held in the locked position by a bolt 15 adapted to pass through a hole in the lever and to be actuated by a plunger contained in a cylinder 14, subjected to train-pipe pressure or vacuum through a pipe 24 connected to the train-pipe 16<a> of the rear vehicle. Another pipe 23 is connected to the pipe 24 and also by a pipe coupling 22 with a pipe 21, which is arranged on the front vehicle and fitted with a blow-off cock 20. The angle-cock 19 of the front vehicle is operated by a cord 42 and, when closed, contacts with the handle 46 of the blow-off cock, which is thereby opened so as to vent the cylinder 14 to atmosphere and allow a spring in the cylinder to disengage the bolt 15 from the lever 3, thus allowing the coupling to be slipped. The angle-cock 19<a> of the rear vehicle may also be operated by a cord, or directly by hand through a door 44.
