Abstract
3959. FlÞre, T. H. Feb. 15. Block paving; foundations.-Consists in constructing a roadway in the form of a number of arcs, each arc being formed of a number of blocks, each of approximately the same size and form. In cases where a resilient layer is provided between the blocks and the paving, expanded metal is arranged in the upper part of the foundation. Fig. 1 shows a section through a roadway formed of granite blocks 5 arranged upon a resilient layer 4 formed of coarse sand, rubber composition, stone screenings, furnace slag, or the like mixed with bitumen. The resilient layer 4 is placed upon a concrete foundation 1 in the upper part of which a layer 3 of expanded metal may be embedded. The spaces between the blocks are partly filled with powdered granite slag, quartz, &c. over which is placed a filling of rubber or bituminous compound. The courses of blocks are arranged, as shown in Fig. 3, in arcs transversely to the roadway, the longitudinal joints being discontinuous. The blocks may be arranged in arcs of varying radii.
