Abstract

2493. Basch, D. Jan. 30. Dress-shields; stiffeners. - A dress-shield is provided with a stiffening-member 9 conforming in general to the outline of the shield 3, but spaced away from the edges thereof so as to enable these edges to act as cushions between the stiffener and the wearer. The stiffener 9 is usually of flexible wire, and is applied to one or both flaps of the shield, usually by pockets 11, 12, into or through which the stiffener passes. These pockets consist of short strips of cloth or rubberized material sewn or cemented to the inner or outer fabric of the shield. In another form, the stiffener is attached by fabric strips 14, 15 applied to the material of the shield while the rubber is soft; or these may first be attached to the stiffener. Three different forms of stiffener are shown in Figs. 3, 5, 10, and 14.
