Abstract

2479. Horsley, E. C., and Daimler Co. Jan. 30. Variable-speed touthed gearing for motorvehicles comprises two gear boxes combined in one unit, each comprising a direct and an indirect drive. Power is imparted to a shaft b and taken from a sleeve g near the far end of a co-axial shaft c. The shaft b is surrounded by flanged sleeves d, c, which carry gears meshing with gears on a countershaft o. Flange armatures m, n on the ends of the shaft b are adapted to coact with magnetic clutch elements 1, 2 on the sleeves d, e. The elements 1, 2 are at a fixed distance apart so that it is impossible for both clutches to be engaged at once. Similarly, gears on the sleeve g and on a sleeve f mesh with gears on a countershaft p, the countershaft being supported in a double casing a. Magnetic clutch elements 3, 4 on the sleeves f, g coact with armatures q, r on the shaft c, and only one of these clutches can be engaged at once. The arrangement may be used along with the reversing-gear described in Specification 2478/13. Specification 2480/13, [Class 79 (v), Motor vehicles, Steering &c.], is also referred to.
