Abstract
74. Williams, P. E., and McPhee, N. Jan. 1. Charging.-A reciprocating poker for stoking furnaces and like operations is actuated hydraulically or pneumatically and provided with means whereby the stroke may be varied and with a special construction of poker. The poker head a, Fig. 6, is riveted or bolted to the bar b and provided with wings e connected by a plate f and strengthened by ribs g. The bar b is provided with wedge-like pieces or fins d and is removably secured within a box-like ram head c, Figs. 1 and 3. The ram comprises a rod h connected to a differential piston i working in a jacketed cylinder, to which fluid under pressure is admitted through the connexion n to the larger area of the piston, and fluid under the same pressure is admitted through the connexion o, space m, and hole i<1> in the liner l to the smaller area of the piston. The supply and exhaust of fluid from the connexion n is controlled by a slide valve p, Fig. 7, connected to a differential piston p' subjected on the side to which the valve-rod p<3> is secured to fluid pressure from the main supply-pipe t and connexion r. The slide valve p is operated by the admission and exhaust of fluid to and from the larger area of the piston p<1> through the connexion s. This is effected by a cock v<1>, which is turned by a rocking shaft w arranged parallel with the ram and provided with adjustable tappets mounted on bosses z free to slide on the shaft w. The ram h is provided with oppositely inclined cam-surfaces y adapted to engage with the tappets x, which may be set by hand to vary the length and position of the stroke of the poker.
