Abstract

2. Wade, H., [United Shoe Machinery Co.]. Jan. 1. Lasting.-A machine for lasting stitch-down shoes &c. is arranged so that relative movement between the grippers and a shoe-rest brings the nose of the gripper jaws into the angle between the side of the last and the projecting margin of the sole. The grippers comprise horizontal jaws 5, 6 formed on adjustable shanks 7, 8, of which the shank 7 is acted upon by a spring 15 to hold the jaw 5 normally in its lowest position. The shank 8 is connected through yielding connexions 20, 22, 35 to a lever 25, which is adapted to be operated by a link 28 and an eccentric from a clutch shaft 30 on the depression of a treadle lever 32. The front end of the lever 25 is threaded to receive adjustably the shank 40 of a work plate 42, which is pivoted to have a limited rocking movement. Above the gripping-plane of the grippers is arranged the nozzle 45 of a tacking-mechanism of ordinary construction. This nozzle moves with a slide 50 having pivoted at its upper end a block 52 located beneath a lever 54, the end of which normally engages a clutch-controlling lever 62 of a shaft 60. A blade 65 is secured to the nozzle in a position to press the upper into the angle between the last and sole. In use, the shoe is placed on the work-- plate 42 with the outwardly-turned flange of the upper between the jaws 5, 6. The treadle is then depressed causing the jaw 6 to close on to the upper, while at the same time the work-plate 42 rises and forces the last upwards into the gripped upper, Fig. 3, until the top face of the sole engages the gripper jaw 5 ; during this movement the blade 65 presses the upper against the side of the last and down into the angle adjacent to the tacking point. Continued upward movement of the work-plate lifts the gripper jaws and permits the shoe to engage and raise the nozzle 45, causing the block 52 to tilt the trip lever 54. This allows the upper shaft 60 to be clutched into gear to start the tacking-mechanism, and to drive a tack from the nozzle into the shoe between the point at which the upper is gripped and the tack last driven.
