Multi-stage centrifugal pumps. - In multistage centrifugal compressors comprising a number of impellers arranged in series and having equal or gradually decreasing diameters from first to last, the exit angles of the blades of one or more impellers are made greater than those of the preceding impeller or impellers, and the ratio of the radial distance of the inner edges of the blades from the shaft centre to the radius of the impeller in one or more impellers is made less than the corresponding ratio in the preceding impeller or impellers. For example, this ratio decreases with each successive impeller 6, 7, 8, 9, Fig. 1, and the exit angles of the blades 13 of the impeller 9, Fig. 4, are greater than those of the blades 10 of the impeller 6, Fig. 2, the exit angles of the blades of the intermediate impellers ranging between these limits. The width of the blades may, as shown, be successively decreased from inlet to exhaust.
