Nitric acid.-Nitrates such as sodium nitrate are purified from halogen by heating with the requisite quantity of an acid such as sulphuric, nitric, or phosphoric acid, or an acid salt such as a bisulphate or polysulphate, or, if chlorides need not be removed, hydrochloric acid may be used. Nitrates thus purified are suitable for making nitric acid, a greater yield of acid being obtained.
