The slot e is semi. circular in cross-section at the centre, but widens out at the ends into ' corner ' parts e<2>, which are approximately spherical, the parts merging into each other through suitable curves. The socket may be formed in two or more parts bolted together, one of which parts may carry a lubricator, or may be formed in one piece spun into position.
