Abstract

27,386. Turner, W. V. May 16, [Convention date]. Void. [Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Fluid-pressure braking-apparatus of the kind normally operated by straight air is provided also with an automatic train-pipe and an emergency valve which effects an automatic application of the brakes upon a sudden reduction in pressure in the automatic pipe, such as is produced when a pipe coupling bursts or the train breaks in two. The invention is applied to the multiple-unit system, the main reservoir on each car being connected by a pipe 5 to the emergency valve 2, which is also connected to the brake cylinder 1 at 17, and to an automatic train-pipe 4 and a straight-air train-pipe 3. The valve comprises a piston 10 formed with a feed port 19 and connected to a slide valve 12. Fig. 2 shows the valve in its normal position, in which a straight-air application is made by operating the driver's valve to admit air to the straight-air pipe from the automatic pipe, such air then passing through ports 15, 16, 17 to the brake cylinder. The brake may be then released by operating the driver's valve to connect the straight-air pipe to atmosphere. When a sudden reduction occurs in the pressure in the automatic pipe, the valve moves to the position shown in Fig. 3, and allows air to pass from the main reservoir to the brake cylinder by ports 13, 17.
