Abstract

Couplings, automatic.-Couplings for pipes on railway &c. vehicles in which the vehicle couplings serve to couple the pipes, are provided with a device which closes the ports to exclude dust &c. when the parts are uncoupled. The coupling described is of the kind in which engaging knuckles are pivoted on pins 4. The lower end of the pin is square to fit a corresponding hole in the lower jaw of the vehicle coupling, and a stirrup frame 19, 20, welded at one end 20<a> to the lower end of the pin, and connected at the other end 20b to the outside of the coupling jaw 3, carries the pipe-coupling head supported by springs 22. This allows vertical and lateral movement. The pipecoupling head comprises telescoping members 13, 15 having a pin-and-slot connexion 16. The member 13 is pressed forward by a spring 17, and the member 15 is connected to the frame 19. Each member 13 has plates 11, 12 and a segmental cam 26 to secure alinement by coacting with corresponding parts of the other head as shown. Flexible pipes 7, 8, 9 connect the train-pipes to ports in the plates 11 which register when the parts are coupled. The plates 11 mav be faced with rubber &c. to secure a good joint. Valves 10 are provided in the trainpipes, and the brake pipe 7 may have a flexible branch 30 fitted with an ordinary coupling- head 32 to allow connexion to a vehicle fitted only with ordinary couplings. A spring-pressed pivoted plate 27 covers the ports when the parts are uncoupled. The invention is shown as coupling the brake, signal, and steam pipes simultaneously.
