Abstract

22,984. Caley, J. Oct. 8. Window appliances. - Fire - escape lowering- apparatus, of the kind in which carriers or buckets are connected to ropes wound on separate or geared drums so that an empty bucket ascends while a loaded bucket descends, are constructed as follows. (1) A single rope is attached at its ends to two geared drums A, B, and buckets F are attached at intervals to the bight of the rope. (2) The drums are arranged above a window inside the building so that the rope does not turn through any acute angles. The form of carrier shown comprises a bag having a stiff bottom, which is strengthened by metal strips N, and is attached directly to the rope. A sling G connects the top of the bag to the rope. Each bag is surrounded by a loop of rope K so that the passenger can maintain his hold on the ascending portion of the rope to check the speed of descent when passing the ascending bag. A pivoted guard plate P carrying a roller prevents chafing of the rope against the window sill.
