Abstract
22,668. Weiss, F. Oct. 5. Aerial machines without aerostats ; planes, construction of; steering. - The areas of the main planes A, A<1>, Fig. 1, of an aeroplane are varied by means of extension planes B normally located within the hollow ends C of the main planes and extended or retracted simultaneously by endless cords D.E. The tail planes K are moved forwards on the fuselage simultaneously with the outward movement of the planes B. The endless cords D, E are attached to the outer end of the planes B, and pass around pulleys D<1>, E<2> rotated through the spur and chain gearing, shown in Fig. 3, from a hand-wheel J. The cords P controlling the longitudinal movement of the tail planes are passed around sprockets on the spindles of the pulleys E<2>. The elevators K' pivoted to the rear edge of the tail planes are actuated by cords Q operated by hand-levers R. The cords Q are provided with a compensating-device whereby they are kept taut in all positions of the tail planes. The cords actuating the rudder are similarly compensated. In a modified arrangement, the extension planes B, Fig. 9, are mounted above the main planes and slide on guide-bars V.
