Abstract

21,610. Chessin, A. Sept. 23. Navigable channels and courses, systems of indicating; signalling proximity of vessels.- Relates to means for guiding a travelling body, such as a ship, air-ship, &c. along a predetermined path, in which a magnetic field is created along the path and the ship &c. carries a receiver responding to the field. The magnetic field is created by means of a number of electrical conductors C<5>, Fig. 9, which may be supplied with currents of different frequencies and are laid along the predetermined paths. The conductors may overlap and may be provided with non-magnetic armour so that the magnetic lines are interrupted at fixed intervals, and linear conductors may be replaced by solenoids. The receiving-apparatus, shown in Fig. 13, comprises two coils 103, 106 at right-angles to one another and adapted to be separately rotated by motors 113 till no current is induced in them by the field of force, a vibrating-string galvanometer 142, Fig. 15, being used as a current-detector. The positions of the coils in this position indicate the situation of the moving body relatively to the chosen path. The arm 114, Figs. 13 and 15, which rotates with its coil, moves over a series of contacts 115, Fig. 15, and indicates by means of ammeters &c. 123 on the bridge or elsewhere the positions of the coils. The motor 113 is regulated by a controller 133, which can be shifted so as to reverse its rotation. A loop on the ship can be used as a subsidiary receiver, and similar apparatus can be employed to keep two ships in their relative position.
