Abstract

20,743. Zoller, J., and Schuster, R. Sept. 19, 1911, [Convention date]. Dynamometers, rotary-absorption.-In an apparatus comprising a countershaft driven from the main shaft, the power transmitted by which is to be measured, and having a friction - brake mechanically applied thereto, (1) the frictional torque communicated by the countershaft to its bearings is measured along with the torque transmitted to the countershaft from the main shaft ; (2) the friction-brake consists either of a number of separately adjusted tensioned elements or of a series of brake-blocks, applied to a brake-drum. (1) The bearings 2, Fig. 1, of the countershaft 1 are themselves supported by ball or knife-edge bearings 4, which permit an oscillating movement, and are connected by members 10, x to a frame 11 carrying the adjustable elements referred to. (2) The turning-effort communicated to the bearings 2 and that of the countershaft 1 are both balanced by the tension or compression of a spring-balance 60, Fig. 2, attached to one end of the frame 11. (2) The elements Y are attached to slides 41, Fig. 3, and can be separately adjusted against the tension of springs 43 to a tension indicated by pointers and scales 46, 47. The slides 41 can be adjusted within the frame 11 by the aid of handwheels and differential screws 50, 51. The elements Y may be applied directly to the brake-drum or be coiled around wooden blocks engaging therewith, or a number of brake-blocks (not shown) can be substituted for the elements Y. Revolutions of the countershaft 1 are counted by means of a shaft 61, Fig. 1, driven therefrom. The brakedrum may be furnished with connexions and passages for a cooling-fluid.
