Anthracene, dyes derived from.-Condensation products are obtained from diaminoanthraquinones and benzoquinone, its halogen derivatives, or alpha-naphthoquinone. The products from benzoquinone or its halogen derivatives dye cotton from a vat in brown to brownish-red shades; the products from a-naphthoquinone have little dyeing power. Other vat dyes are obtained by condensing the above-described condensation products with halogenanthraquinones; these dye brownish-red to claret-red shades. According to examples, 1:8-diaminoanthraquinone is condensed with benzoquinone; 1:5- or 2:6-diaminoanthraquinone give similar products; 1:5-diaminoanthraquinone is condensed with alpha-naphthoquinone, and the product is further condensed with #-chloranthraquinone; #-chloranthraquinone may be replaced by alpha-chloranthraquinone, and benzoquinone may replace the naphthoquinone. Suitable diluents for use in the process are glacial acetic acid, alcohol, and nitrobenzene; catalysts may be used or a current of air passed through the reaction mixture.
