Abstract
19,514. Lake, W. E., [United States Light and Heating Co.]. Aug. 26. Lighting systems; starting primemovers, d y n a m oelectric machines with control circuits, for.-In a starting system for automobiles and the like comprising a battery and a dynamo with its armature mounted directly on the engine shaft to act as a fly-wheel, the dynamo is mounted between the clutch and the engine and is adapted to be started by the battery as an additively-compounded motor and to run as a differentiallycompounded automatically - regulated generator for charging the cells after the engine has attained its speed. The dynamo is placed between the crank-shaft H, Fig. 2, and the clutch 4, 3 of ordinary construction, the latter being connected at 25 to the gear-box shaft. The multipolar field element 2 is bolted to the crank casing J, and the gramme armature 1 and commutator 9 are carried by a sleeve 10 which is bolted to the shaft H and carries the outer clutch member 3. The machine is used in conjunction with an automatic regulator R, Fig. 7, a foot-actuated switch S, and a battery B divided into two parts. The regulator consists of a core 36 having shunt and series coils 34, 35 and two armatures 30, 28, the former carrying a contact 31, normally held open by a spring 33, and the latter serving to compress a resistance pile 27 under the action of a spring 29. The switch, Fig. 5, is operated by a pedal 52, and consists of a drum 39 carrying contacts, such as 41, 44, in cooperation with fixed brushes 48, 50. The contacts 41, 44 are permanently connected by a conductor 63, Fig. 7. For starting the engine, the drum is turned so as to connect the brushes 41, 46 and 48, 49 respectively by contacts 42, 43. In this position, the machine D runs as an additivelycompounded high torque motor on both battery sections b<1>, b<2> in series, the shunt coil 2<b> receiving current through the conductors 67, 66, 70 and the rheostat 27. When the engine begins to run on its own fuel, the pedal is released and the connexions become as shown in Fig. 7. In this position, the coil 2b carries current as before, and when the generated volts of the machine D reach a charging value, the regulator coil 35 closes the contact 31, completing the charging circuit between the generator and the two halves of the battery now connected in parallel. The current in the series field coil 2<a> is now reversed, giving a low charging voltage. The charging current is automatically controlled by the differential action of the regulator coils 34, 35 upon the lever 28 which controls the resistance 27 in the generator shunt circuit. The side-lights s are connected in series across the battery by leads 73, 74 with the taillights t in parallel with one of them, and the headlights h are connected across the two battery sections through a neutral wire 75.
