Abstract
18,522. Coupal, A. E. Aug. 12. Stapling.-A stapling-machine comprises means for cutting and bending wire to make a staple, the extremities of the legs of which bend in clinching towards one another and to the same side of a plane passing longitudinally through the body of the staple. The wire is fed through a guide 18 over a fixed cutter 15 having an inclined face 16 and a shoulder 24 forming cutting-edges beneath the wire. A moving cutter 19 carried by a, lever 20 has a corresponding inclined face 21, the cutting-edge 26, which is concave and slopes upwards from the edge adjacent to the shoulder 24 and also carrries a shoulder 22. In cutting the wire, the moving cutter, owing to its concave edge, bends down the end 28, the staple blank being formed, and, owing to the yielding of the material, the shoulder 22 bevels the upper edge of the extremity of the wire remaining to form the end 30 of the next blank. A point-bender 33 carried by a rocking lever 34 bends the point 30 into the plane of the front edge of the wire and into alinement with one other point, as in Fig. 10. The bender 33 operates between the fixed cutter and a stripper 35, which prevents the wire from rising while the guide 18 prevents the wire from moving forwards. A staple former and carrier 36 has a wire clamp 45 pivoted to it with a notch 47 to receive the wire. The wire having been fed the required distance, the carrier and clamp move rearwards to engage the wire, and after the severing of a blank, they move forward and carry the blank to a point beneath a throat 51 in a throat-slide reciprocating vertically in a forwardly and rearwardly slidable head 53. A driver 60 is arranged in the throat 51. The throat 51, descending upon the blank in the former and carrier 36, bends it into the form of a staple, which is then held by frictional contact in the throat. The former and carrier recede to re-engage the wire, and the throat carries the staple over the work, whereupon the driver is operated and the staple driven and clinched. The completed staple has a curved face 28 on the leg 31, and a bevelled end 30 on the leg 32, which act to cause the points to move inwards on contact with the work support 67, and the leg 32 having been bent to bring the point 30 into the plane of the point on the leg 31 and one side of the rectangular staple wire, both points bend upwards on the same side of the staple, effecting a clinch as shown in Figs. 16 and 18. The two ends of the staple blank are bent by the cutter 19 and the bender 33 respectively, in directions substantially at right-angles to one another.
