Abstract
18,358. Carey, R. F. Aug. 9. Fluid - pressure apparatus. - Comprises the combination of two fluid-pressure motors having a number of cylinders of any known variablecapacity type with the driving pulley or drum of a lift, crane, or the like and means for controlling the motors and braking the drum. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2; the motors 1, 2 are connected direct with the driving-pulley 3 from which the cage and weights of the lift are suspended, the cage being overbalanced. A hydraulically operated brake block 6 is provided controlled by a pilot valve in a casing 7, which valve also controls a stop valve 9 so that when pressure is admitted to the system the brake is taken off. The brake and cut-off valve mav be operated electrically or mechanically if desired. From the valve 9 pipes 11, 12 are run to valve boxes 13, 14 which supply fluid to the motors through ports 15, 16 and then through valves 17, 18 to work the engine, the exhaust taking place through pipes 19, 20. The casing 7 is also connected by pipes to the cylinders 21, 22 the piston-rods of which operate the valves 17, 18 through rack and pinion gear. The cylinders 21, 22 are connected, on the other side of the piston, by pipes to the main. The valve 7 may be operated by a foot-lever in the cage connected to a cord running over pulleys in the well, which cord actuates the pilot valve. In the present case the valve rod 30<a> is connected bv an arm 32 to a shaft 33 which is connected by a lever 34 to the control rope. The pilot valve 29<a>, Fig. 8, is of the D-type and controls ports leading to the pipes 35, 36, 37, 38, as shown in Fig. 11. The entrance 8 is connected to the main, and the port 38 to the exhaust, while the ports 35, 36 are connected to the cylinders controlling the valves 17, 18, the port 37 being connected to the valve 9 by a pipe 41, a branch pipe 42 leading to the brake cylinder 54. On the shaft 33 are fixed cranks 47, 48 at right-angles, which cranks are connected by links 49, 50 to bell-cranks pivoted on the engine casing and actuating the rods 61 which operate loose one - way valves in the casings 13, 14. The valve casing has an inlet on either side for convenience in gearing, the one not in use being closed by a cap. The two motors are set at the stop position to oppose one another, preferably at full capacity. In this position they neutralize each other, and upon opening the control valve various speeds may be obtained. One motor may be brought to the no work ' position and the capacity of the set is then that of the other motor. The full capacity of the set is attained when one motor is reversed and both work together in the same direction at full capacity. A modification shows the drum driven from the motors through spur gearing. Specification 19,519/11, [Class 69 (i), Hydraulic presses &c.], is referred to.
