Abstract

18,205. Anderson, H. N. Aug. 8, 1911, [Convention date]. Rolling wheels. - Driving-mechanism is employed which maintains absolute equality of the pitch-line velocities of the blank and master gear during the whole operation. For rolling gear teeth in one form of machine, a master gear in the form of a rack is employed. Roughing and finishing racks 120, 121 are mounted upon a reciprocating carriage 62 so as to be transversely and vertically adjustable. A rack 68 also connected to the carriage engages a pinion 41 keyed to the blank-spindle 31, thus giving the correct rolling motion. The carriage is connected by levers 76 with a guide-slot 80 which causes the carriage to be lowered at one end of the stroke; this brings the rack and blank out of gear and, by making one or more of the end teeth of the rack 68 vertically displaceable, the blank may be made to engage a different part of the rack at the next stroke and thus minimize errors. The blank-spindle 31 is adjustable vertically by nuts 34 geared together and the blank is clamped in position by a plate 48, a screwed sleeve 49 facilitating removal. In a modification, a machine similar to that described in Specification 557/11 is employed, but the blank-carrying plate is pivoted about an axis passing through the pitchpoint of the driving wheels to ensure constant depth of enmeshment.
