Abstract
18,082. Kugel, C. Aug. 6. Tunnel furnaces; charging and discharging.- A tunnel furnace for annealing metals, of the kind in which the heating and cooling operations are effected in an atmosphere of inert gas, is provided at each end with an extension chamber communicating with a vertical hoisting-chamber for introducing or removing the trucks carrying the articles to be annealed. Fig. 1 shows the annealing portion a of the furnace with its extension b adapted to communicate with the hoisting-chamber c having a door f through which a trolley e carrying a truck d is introduced. When the door f has been closed and the cover g lowered to close the top of the chamber c, gas is introduced through the conduit i and air is forced out through the conduit h.. By operating the hoist the truck d is raised with the cover g into the extension b. A rack m operated by a pinion n pushes the truck into the annealing-chamber a, while simultaneously a truck d<1> is pushed from the cooling-chamber a<1>, Fig. 2, partly into the extension b<1>. Each truck is provided with a pawl p which drops into a notch q on the rack m<1>, Fig. 4. By turning the pinion n<1>, the rack m<1> pushes the truck completely into the extension b<1> and it is then lowered into the chamber c' and the cover g<1> closed. Air is admitted through the conduit i<1> and gas is discharged through the conduit h<1>, after which the truck J<1> can be removed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 13,773/12.
