Abstract
16,312. United Shoe Machinery Co. July 14, 1911, [Convention date]. Uppers, machines for. -The rear end of a boot or shoe upper is formed with a curve corresponding to t h e heel of the last, and with a bent - in portion in proximity to the top edge of the counter, in a machine which also has means for forming an inturned flange on the bottom edge of the upper. The machine shown is arranged for dealing with two uppers, so that one can be left to set while the operator attends to the other. Each upper is supported on an inside former 75, which corresponds in the shape of its rear end to the shape of a last and is bolted to a boss 77 projecting downwards from the machine frame. A crease B is formed between the body of the former and an extension 81 thereof. The upper is moulded on the inside former by outer formers 69, which are removably mounted upon holders 71 carried on a slide 67 and are pivoted to enable them to close in on the inner former. In their open position, a gap appears between the adjacent ends of the outer formers near their pivot, and this gap is bridged by a leather lining. The slide 67 is moved forwards to press the formers against the rear end of the inside former by the straightening of toggle links 59 operated by a cam on a cam shaft 31. The outer formers have their lower edges at the rear rounded off so that they press the upper into the recess above the heel of the inside former, without marking it. After the outer formers have clamped and ridged the rear end of the upper, they are closed in upon the inside former by links 85 and a sliding cross-head 87. The cross-head 87 is resiliently connected to a link 89 attached to one arm 93 of a bell-crank lever rocked by a cam on the cam-shaft. The projecting lower edge of the upper and the stiffener is wiped over the base of the inside former by wipers 107 mounted upon carriers 109, which are reciprocated through links 111, a cross-head 113, and rods 115, 117 from a second bell-crank lever 119 rocked bv a cam on the shaft 31. To prevent the forward end of the upper from being lifted as the outer formers are moved forwards, the inside former is provided with a stop 103 pivoted in its lower face and hanging down by gravity to a position determined bv an adjustable nut on a checkrod 105. This stop also serves as a gauge for the work. The cam-shaft is driven from a power shaft, which is provided with a clutch and a brake for automatically stopping the cam-shaft at each half revolution. If desired, the automatic stopping of the machine may be rendered inoperative, and the machine run under the direct control of the workman through the clutch treadle.
