Abstract
15,777. Illingworth, S. R., and Gas Lighting Improvement Go. July 5. Carbon bisulphide is removed and recovered from liquid or solid substances by treating with an alcohol and an alkali, separating the resultant salt of an alkyl sulphothiocarbonic acid, and treating this with acid for the separation of the bisulphide. In an example, benzol is treated with alcoholic potash, and water is added to dissolve the xanthate. The layers of liquid are separated, and carbon bisulphide is separated by adding acid continuously to the xanthate solution. Or the xanthate may be filtered off, and the benzol washed, the washwaters being used to dissolve the separated xanthate. The layer of bisulphide is separated from the acidified liquid, and the alcohol may be recovered by neutralizing and distilling the remaining liquor. The alcohol may be replaced by commercial ethyl alcohol, wood spirit, a fusel oil, and hydroxide or oxide, of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal, or a methoxide, ethoxide, or propoxide may be used instead of the caustic potash.
