Abstract

13,566. Reynolds, A. June 10. Combinations of interdependent valves.-To ensure the correct proportions of air and fuel in furnace systems in which producer gas or vaporized liquid fuel is used, special valve apparatus is employed which either controls the relative amount of air supplied to the producer and the furnace respectively or the supply of vapour and air. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement in the former case. Two lift valves 7, 8 control the outlets from the high-pressure air - supply pipe to the producer and furnace respectively. The valves are of the requisite relative diameters and are connected to a spring - loaded lever 30, which is so proportioned that the lifts of the valves are proportional to their diameters, their openings being thus in a constant ratio, while the resistance to the passage of air through them is great compared to that offered to the flow of the air in the furnace or producer. Fig. 3 shows the arrangement when vaporized liquid fuel is used. In this case, the valve 53 controls the outlet from the vaporizer, and the valve 54 controls the supply of air under pressure to the furnace. The valves are connected together and loaded as before. The vaporizer has a heating- surface in excess of the normal requirements, but the valve 53 being loaded to a greater degree than the valve 54, any excess of vapour causes hack pressure, which forces the liquid fuel back from the vaporizer into the supply-tank, thus controlling the rate of vaporization.
