Abstract

13,106. Constantinescu, G. June 4. Clutches, friction.-In a friction clutch of the type in which the co-operating frictional surfaces are placed in contact by fluid pressure, clearances are provided so that there is always a substantial flow of the fluid between the surfaces. The clutching force is found by calculation to be proportional to the square of the quantity of flow in a given time, consequently this may be varied by varying the rate of flow. The invention is illustrated in connexion with the transmission of a variable drive from a worm shaft U to a vehicle axle D. A worm-wheel A, without a hub, is bolted to side members B supported by ball bearings E on the axle and free to rotate within a casing J secured to side members N embracing the axle. Clutch pistons F are keyed to the axle so that they can slide axially thereon. Air under pressure admitted to annular spaces P presses the clutch pistons against the sides of the worm-wheel with a force proportional to the square of the quantity of leakage past the clutch surfaces, said leakage escaping through passages S in the worm-wheel to a port T open to the atmosphere. In a modification, the clutch members are normally held in engagement by springs and compressed air is admitted at the port T to disengage or lessen the pressure of engagement of the clutch members. When oil is used instead of compressed air, it is circulated by a pump and also serves to keep the parts lubricated.
