Abstract

12,584. Mathys, A. W., [Richmond Stay Bolt Drilling Machine Manufacturing Co.]. May 28. Drilling-machines.-In a drilling-machine for use in drilling stay-bolts for locomotive fireboxes &c., the work and drills are carried in rotary carriers revolving together and the drills are fed forward through progressive amounts by a stationary cam. The drill spindles 17 are mounted in a worm-wheel 13 and are supported at their forward ends by a part 15 integral with the worm-wheel, each spindle having a sleeve 26 fixed on its forward end with a roller 33, adapted to bear against a cam-plate 87, Fig. 3. The cam-plate has a three-part surface, adapted to feed the drills by three successive amounts, angle cams 97, 98, 99 serving to withdraw the drills to clear the holes after each feed. Splined to each spindle is a pinion 39 in gear with a pinion 11 mounted on the same boss as the driving- pulley 9, whereby the spindles are rotated, rotation being also communicated from this pulley through gearing to the worm-wheel 13. The bolts to be drilled are supported in a workholder formed of two disks 49, 50, adjustable longitudinally with respect to each other for different lengths of bolts by screws 53. The front plate is formed in two parts, one 52 having guides 60 for the drills, while the other 51 carries the gripping - devices. These consist of fixed jaws 80 and pivoted jaws 73, the latter being pivoted to a three-armed lever 68 carrying a roller on one arm pressed into contact with a fixed cam 57, the cam being so shaped as to release the work when finished. Each gripping- part has axial ridges to prevent rotation, and transverse threads to engage those on the bolt and prevent end movement during drilling. The bolts are held in holes 63 in the rear plate and in grooves in the front plate.
