A tread D, of leather, canvas, cork, composition, or the like, may be inserted in a recess made in the pad ; or the tread may be sprung over a projecting central pad of rubber..In the modification shown in Fig. 5, on a Cuban heel, the flange is extended and is secured to the heel by tacks E. A reinforcing- plate F<1> may be provided, through which a further securing- tack F may pass.
