Staiths and elevated structures; rotary tipplers.-In an apparatus for discharging trucks, the trucks are received in a cage which is hoisted and moves a shoot beneath the same, whereupon the contents of the truck are discharged either by dumping or by rotating the cage. The cage consists of a series of connected rings 2 having apertured disks 5, each carrying sections of rail 22, on which is mounted a carriage 27 provided with rails for receiving the trucks 35. The cage is suspended by the bights of two ropes; the bight of one rope passing round pulleys 92 on the cage, the ends being wound on a hoisting-drum 71. The bight of the other rope is passed beneath the cage and around pulleys 93, the ends of the rope being wound round a drum 72. The cage is provided with a curved bar or shoe 119 normally resting on a bolster 11 at the bottom of the hoisting-structure. The hoisting-structure comprises a series of arched columns 13 supporting a platform carrying the hoisting-gear. Guideways 15, which are of circular formation at the upper end, are formed in the columns, and the cage is provided with rollers 17 running in the guideways. The cage is balanced by a series of weights 120 suspended by ropes 123. On hoisting the cage, the drums 71, 72 are rotated in the same direction. As the cage ascends, ropes 146 connected to the balance weights are stretched taut and rotate differential drums 136 round which are wound ropes 141 passing beneath the cage and attached to a pivoted shoot 134, so that after the cage has risen a certain distance, the shoot 134 is raised beneath it into alinement with a fixed shoot 135. The contents of the truck may then be dumped through bottom doors, or the cage may be rotated in the circular part of the guideways 15. This is effected by reversing the direction of rotation of the drum 71 through a reversing gear operated by a hand-wheel 106 on the operator's platform 116. The rails on the carriage 27 are provided with depressions for retaining trucks of various sizes in position. As the cage is rotated, the carriage 27 moves along the rails 22 so that the side of the truck engages a timber lining 39 carried by the apertured disks 5. At the same time, a weighted sector engaging a pinion rotates a series of endless chains carrying cross-rods which move downwards over the truck and clamp it in the cage.
