Abstract

9844. Parkes, S. R. April 25. Ball bearings.-An axle-box for railway &c. vehicles is fitted with ball bearings contained within an inner box 3. 4, Fig. 1, supported by side !ugs in the outer box 1. The inner box is made in two parts bolted together, and has . one or more divisions 14 forming compartments to hold the balls and their races. A distancepiece 8 placed over the inner box is retained by projections 9, 11 engaging recesses. A two-part sleeve 18 on the axle 15 is held against relative rotation by lugs projecting into slots 23, and has a central groove to receive a rib 24 on the division 14. The sleeve is of such a length as to allow the axle to move through it to take the side lash of the vehicle. The two parts of the sleeve 18 have engaging projections and recesses on their edges. Fig. 6 shows a modification, in which a ball-thrust bearing is placed between a flange 26 on the sleeve 18 and a partition 29 in the inner box. A second ball-thrust bearing is placed at the end of the axle, the ballraces being placed between the end'of the box and a thrust ring 32 loosely surrounding a plain pin 31.
