Abstract
9655. UrgellÚs, J. M. April 23. Decorticating. - After removing the skin in any suitable apparatus B, the coffee berries pass by a hopper D on to a travelling band F, a layer of abrasive material, such as sand or sawdust, being deposited below by a feed-roller E<4> in the spout E<1>, and a layer above the berries by a feed-roller E<5>. The berries are then brought beneath a roller G, covered with rubber &c., which presses the sand &c. into the pulp, and fall, with a further quantity of sand &c. from the roller E<6>, into a hopper H leading to a grinding, tumbling, and brushing device I which loosens the pulp. The casing is coated with cement, and contains fluted rolls T<2>, similarly coated, between which are secured plates I<3> having four bent arms, acting as conveyer blades. Towards the discharge end the rolls are replaced by spiral brushes I<5> and the berries are finally expelled in a washing-drum J<2>, perforated below, and mounted in a water-bath K. Oblique agitating-blades J<4> detach the pulp and sand &c., which pass through the perforations and are removed by a spout K<2>, the beans being discharged through a shoot L.
