9203. Ubbelohde, L. April 18. Resistances.-In a furnace, an oxidizable wire wound on an insulating tube is protected by an outer layer of carbon but is separated from it by a porous insulating layer to avoid shortcircuiting at high temperatures. The wire may consist of an alloy of iron and nickel, containing 25 per cent of the latter metal and having a resistance at 1,000‹ C. only 46 per cent greater that at 20‹ C. ; this enables the furnace to be started at the full working pressure. In the form shown, a wire a is wound on a tube b of glass, porcelain, or the like and is embedded in a porous material which may consist of 27 parts of burnt clay, 10 parts of fibrous asbestos, 63 parts of alumina, and a little water-glass, made plastic with a 3¢ per cent solution of soda, the whole being surrounded by powdered carbon d in a metal case. An air-tight packing f of asbestos sheets at each end of the tube is held by a metal cover. In a modification, the porous insulator consists of a clay tube separated by a space from the wire a.
