Abstract

9026. Johansen, J. C. April 16. Massage.-A massage apparatus of the stationary type comprises a casing B adjustably mounted between upright standards and enclosing a motor and mechanism for actuating the stems of tapping and frictional applicators which project through holes in one or more sides of the casing. A crank-pin on the shaft of the motor C oscillates slotted levers D, E, of which the lever D is connected to a shaft d carrying a bar d<4>, so that rollers d<5> on this bar alternately strike the ends of applicator stems d' when these are forced inwards, against spring- pressure, by pressing against the part to be treated. The lever D also actuates two tapping applicator stems e<5> in the side of the casing by means of pivoted rods e, e<1> and an oscillating shaft e<6>. Instead of operating the stems e<5> from the lever D, the stems may be extended so that one is actuated by contact with the lever E, while the other is actuated by a cam on the shaft of the motor. The lever E is connected to a shaft f carrying a slotted bar f<1>, in which are adjustably mounted pins f<6> adapted to receive the tubular stems of frictional applicators, so that the oscillations of the lever E cause the bar f<1> to oscillate in a vertical plane when the clutch members f<4>, f<5> are forced into engagement against the action of the spring f<3> by pressing the applicators against the body. The lever E also rocks a shaft h<2> through a pin h<1> and forked arm h<4> and thus oscillates bars h' mounted on the shaft h<2> and carrying rollers h<8> adapted to strike the stems h<9> of tapping applicators, when the stems are pressed inwards against the springs h<11> by pressing the applicators against the body. The shaft h<2> may carry a frictional applicator. The outer portion of the stems h<9> is threaded to carry a disk h<12> for the purpose of regulating the extent of the tapping action. A pair of frictional applicators mounted in the heads g<9> are actuated from the motor shaft through gearwheels g<1> ... g<6> and shafts g<7>, when the clutch members g<12>, g<13> are forced into engagement against the action of the springs g<11> by pressing the applicators against the body. The applicators actuated by the shafts g' may be given an eccentric motion by mounting them on stems g<14> carrying arms g<15>, g<16> at different distances from the stems, these arms being adapted to fit into eccentric holes in the heads g<9>. In addition to being vertically adjustable by means of a winding-drum, the casing may be adjusted round its horizontal axis by providing it with trunnions engaging apertures in side plates, which are attached by cords to the winding-drum. A clamping-device actuated by a spring-pressed pin and an eccentric lever fixes the casing in any position. The casing may have double walls with sound-deadening material between.
