Abstract

8397. Powling, W. T., and Powling, B. B., [trading as Powling Bros.]. April 9. Fats, extracting by rendering &c. Tallow or other fats, bones, offal, oil seeds, &c. are treated for the extraction of fat and moisture and the production of residues suitable for food for animals &c. by heating them in small quantities in an horizontal jacketed cylinder fitted with blades &c. driven at such a speed as to spread the material in a thin layer in contact or in close proximity with the entire heating-surface. In one form of apparatus, blades mounted on arms extending from a central shaft bring the material into contact with the heating-surface. Another form of apparatus consists of a perforated openended drum 2, into which the material is fed by a hopper r, and which is mounted on arms i carrying blades j arranged to rotate in close proxinity with the surface of the jacketed cylinder b. Any gases that are evolved pass away by a flue s. Oil seeds and bones are crushed before treatment.
