Abstract

7388. Royston, E. R., [Moore, R. A.]. March 26. Sound of discharge, modifying .-Consists (1) in a silencer in which intersecting spiral movements are imparted to the gases, and (2) in means for securing the silencer to the gun muzzle so that contact between the gases and the muzzle is prevented. In the silencer casing 1 a longitudinal baffle-tube 12 is arranged, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to intersect a number of expansion chambers 9. The tube 12 is formed with a number of spirally-disposed openings, and the rear edges 13 of some of these, and the front edges 14 of others, are bent inwards to form deflecting fins for the gases. The fins 13 deflect the gases outwards, the fins 14 deflect them across the central bore, while the general disposition of the openings tends to impart to the gases intersecting spiral movements. A rearwardly-extending expansion chamber 5 with baffles 10 is also provided. A cap 16 is placed between the muzzle 2 of the gun and the socket 4 of the silencer, which cap has slight freedom of movement as the gun-barrel expands and contracts.
