Barium oxide and basic carbonate.-Barium oxide, suitable for the production of the peroxide, is obtained by heating barium carbonate in a receptacle which is impermeable to the carbonic acid of the heating-gases.. In an example, barium carbonate, mixed with fine soot, is heated in a quartz crucible the lid of which is luted on with fireproof cement, a hole being provided for the escape of the evolved gases. It is stated that if the lid be laid on loosely, the upper part of the charge is found to be a partly-fused basic. carbonate. Other materials stated to be suitable for the receptacle are porcelain and similar refractory materials, metals, and alloys, and particularly those kinds of iron that melt at high temperatures. Specification 3976/83 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 3628/90.
