Abstract
5558. Fowler, R. H., Royston, H., and Popper, A. March 5. Cultivators and harrows. - In an implement which moves to-and-fro without turning and is adapted for use as a disk cultivator, disk harrow, or tooth harrow, two sets of chains are provided for suspending and lifting the diskshaft frame and the tooth-harrow frame, respectively, and the disk shafts are mounted so as to reverse automatically. The disk-shaft frame a is adapted to be attached to chains b, and the tooth-harrow frame to chains c. The chains b pass over pulleys e to arms f on the shaft of a drum d, and the chains c are connected to larger pulleys h on the shafts of the pulleys e. The drum d is normally locked by a toothed lever g, but when released is rotated by the pull of the traction cable. It is provided with a band brake n applied by means of a spring-controlled foot-lever o. The frame a resembles that described in Specification 29,167/10. One end of each of the disk'shafts is jointed to a fixed sleeve and the other to a sleeve free to slide between adjustable stops on one of the frame bars, so as to allow of automatic reversal of the angle of the shaft. Depth of work may be adjusted by means of turnbuckles &c. In order that all the wheels may be steered simultaneously, the steering-arm of each pair is connected to a double lever q, which is provided with a toothed segment gearing with a worm on the steering-spindle. In a modification, the two sets of chains are fastened to crank levers connected to a screwed rod as described in Specification 29,167/10.
