Cooling discharged materials.-In a kiln fur revivifying animal charcoal having vertical rotary retorts, the char passes from the retorts b to the coolers d through outwardly sloping passages g formed in a fitting a supported on the shaft h by which the retort and coolers are rotated. The coolers are carried by arms projecting from a boss i secured to the shaft h, and a screw adjustment m is provided to force them into close contact with the fitting a. The connecting portions c between the coolers and the fitting a are so formed that the char is delivered from the passages g at about the middle of the width of the coolers.
