Abstract

5218. Anger, J. E. March 1. Compensating for wear.-In means for taking up the slack in brakes of tramcars &c., of the kind described in Specification 5369/00, in which screwed brake - rods engage ratchet - operated nuts, the ratchet-wheels I are enclosed in water and dust proof casings F, which carry the pawls K and are connected in pairs across the vehicle by rods J for simultaneous operation, and the nuts H are formed with squared ends which project beyond the casings, so that when the pawls are released from their ratchet-wheels by thumb-levers K<2> also outside of the casings, the nuts may be operated by hand to allow the brake blocks M to be removed. The thumb-levers K<2> are fixed on the spindles of the pawls, these spindles passing through the casing in a dust-proof manner. The casing is provided with a detachable coverplate at one side, which is secured thereto by bolts passing through lugs F<2>. The ratchetwheel bears against a collar formed on the nut H, and the pawls operate in embayments f provided at one side of the casing. The casings, which are mounted loosely on the nut, are actuated by a rod E connected to the brake lever A, Fig. 2, and to the lower end of one of the casings. Fig. 6 shows the invention applied to a truck having brake blocks M hung between a pair of wheels. The nut H is screwed on to a rod P connected to one of the brake beams C<1>, and is formed with an extension which carries a loose sleeve R provided with a trunnion pin B for the brake lever A. An arm S on the lever A is coupled to the casing F of the slack-adjuster by a rod T. The slack-adjuster may be applied to the rod Q connecting the levers A, A'.
