Abstract
4119. Inrig, G., and Inrig, L. Feb. 19. Lighting systems.-The main circuit of a variable-speed dynamo of the kind described in Specification 20,905/11, [Class 35, Dynamo-electric generators &c.], is opened and closed by a knife-switch Q, Fig. 1, operated by a Pickering governor P. When the machine is started, the spring 0 of the governor is compressed and a sliding collar R travels along the shaft as far as a shoulder R<1> thereon; a loose collar T, having a forked connexion with the switch-lever S, follows the collar R and allows a spring S' to close the switch Q. A further increase of speed causes the core I to be drawn out of the armature; at an excessive speed, the core is drawn so far out of the armature, that the sleeve M engages sliding keys in the shaft, said keys then pushing the loose collar T back and opening the main switch Q. The polarity of the brushes is kept the same, irrespective of the direction of rotation, by causing the brush-rocker to be carried round frictionally by the commutator in the direction of rotation until two of four iron stops y, Fig. 3, mounted on the rocker come into contact with the poles of locking electro-magnets V. The coils of the magnets V are in series with the shunt fieldmagnet coils. According to the Provisional Specification, the brnsh-rocker keeper is pushed away from the magnet by a spring plunger when the machine comes to rest.
