Abstract

3414. Beaumont, W. W. Feb. 10. Packing, metallic; stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Fig. 9 shows a joint for use where a gyrating shaft passes out of the vat of a paperpulp strainer. A disk or annulus B fitting freely on the boss of a disk C which is fixed to the shaft x is pressed against a disk A on the vat end by a pneumatic tube E. The plate A has a circular groove packed with a ring of vulcanized fibre, woodite, or the like. Gradual rotation of the disk B is prevented by teeth on the disk which engage with corresponding teeth on the boss of the disk C. The joint between the rotary strainer drum and the end of the vat is made by means of a pneumatic tube A, Figs. 10 and 11, which is fitted into a groove B' in the vat end. Intermediate between the tube A and the drum is a strip C of metal, covered with felt and attached at the ends to pins G on supports F, which form a backing for the tube so that the joint is continued above the centre line of the drum.
